Summary: In the early 1950s Mary Ellen Rudin wrote her first three papers [Mary Ellen Estill, Duke Math. J. 17, 317-327 (1950; Zbl 0039.39303); 18, 623-629 (1951; Zbl 0044.19503); 19, 629-639 (1952; Zbl 0048.28401)]. A modern interpretation of these articles is given.
