MacLane, Saunders Requiem for the skillful. (English) Zbl 0934.01019 Notices Am. Math. Soc. 44, No. 2, 207-208 (1997). There is a common misconception that mathematicians do not have skills in applied mathematics, let alone practical applied mathematics. MacLane dispels the myth by giving examples of those who did: Hassler Whitney, Leon Cohen, Magnus Hestenes, Leon Brillouin, Walter Leighton, Adrian Albert, Edgar Lorch, Paul Smith, Arthur Sard, Harry Pollard: all these made their names in pure mathematics, and made their contribution in WWII in applied mathematics: gun sights, pursuit curves, ballistic tables, approximations, fire control.
