Irreducible subgroups of orthogonal groups generated by groups of root type 1

Abstract

In this paper it is shown that the only irreducible subgroups of orthogonal groups over finite fields of odd characteristic generated by groups of root type 1 are (1) unitary groups, (2) groups of type G₂, or (3) the commutator subgroups of the orthogonal groups in question. This is a generalization of a previous result by the author.
