Minimal surfaces and Heegaard splittings of the three-torus

Charles Dale Frohman

Vol. 124 (1986), No. 1, 119–130
Abstract

An unknotting criterion for proper arcs in F × I is proved. This is then applied to show the topological uniqueness of least genus one-sided Heegaard splittings of the three-torus and of genus three two-sided minimal surfaces in a flat three-torus.
